Personally I'd stay well away from prebuilt systems like Gateway, Alienware, eMachines and Dell et al! Nothing but cheap tat at an expensive price.

If you're capable of adding a secondary PSU to power your Graphics Card then you're more than capable of building your own system.

The vista 32 bit OS is a waste of cash get the 64 bit or Xp, with 64 bit chips.

I don't personally recommend 64-bit Vista, in my experience 32-bit has enough driver issues. However, if you actually plan to ever use more than 4GB of RAM, you'll need a 64-bit operating system. 32-bit OS's can only see up to 4GB.

In all honesty, the system you're replacing is pathetically overpowered for Guild Wars. For GW2, who knows... by the time it comes out DX10 graphics may be commonplace enough that it will use them. I'd be extremely surprised if your old system wouldn't still run it acceptably, though.

I don't know what other games you plan on playing, but if GW is all you plan to use it for, use what you've already got until GW2 gets closer. By then better hardware will be out, anyway.

The 8600GT is a bad choice imho. It may be from the latest GeForce series but it's still just a midrange card, and in a year or two when there actually are some DX10 games worth caring about the card will be too outdated to run them at decent settings. That old 7950GT of yours is probably faster, too.

If you're planning on getting more RAM paying for the 2x512 MB [email protected] MHz sticks is a bit of a waste of money - Core 2 Duo's are already somewhat limited by memory bandwidth in heavy multiprocessing applications, and the system will have to use the RAM at the speed of the slowest RAM module, so you'll have to get rid of the junk to install better stuff.

Also, Windows Vista is still pretty crappy unless your definition of "computer use" is e-mail, single-tabbed web browsing and some instant messaging. I tried the professional edition once, spent hours trying to get it to perform as well as Windows XP, and won't touch it again until there's plenty of guides on the web for removing all the useless crap and they get a service pack or two out to fix the bugs (aka "features").

To the best of my knowledge, there is no single-tabbed browser that even runs on Windows Vista. If you've managed to get one to run, I'd like to know what it was... The default browser is IE7 which, as much as it sucks, at least has tabbed browsing on par with Firefox.

In my experience, the only problem Vista has is drivers... and that's nvidia, ATI, and Creative's problem. Not Microsoft. By the way, there is no Windows Vista "Professional."

Yes, but the people who don't care about Vista's inefficient use of a computer's resources are often the same people who don't know or care about tabs, hence "single-tabbed browsing".

My mistake, meant the Business edition. Though it's pretty much intended to be the new XP Pro.

Go with Vista Premium 64-bit. Yeah it’s still buggy but it will be fixed over time. You need 64-bit for 3+ GB of RAM and only Vista can use DX10 features, which is well worth buying vista. Also, future games/apps will be running better on 64-bit instead of 32-bit I’ve herd.

As for the 8600, if you buy that card. Make sure it is Evga and use the Step Up Plan to upgrade it to a 8800GTS or better ASAP.

8 GB of ram is waaaaay over kill. Just buy 2 x 2GB sticks. If u ever need to upgrade just buy another 2GB stick. 4GB will even be more than enough for future game like Crysis. 8GB just isn’t worth it unless you have the money. Also remember DDR3 memory is here but hasn’t proven itself for its price yet. If you buy 8GB, you are going to regret spending so much money to upgrade to that because DDR3 will kick its ass. Oh and, go for RAM that is DDR2 800MHz

That PSU is kind of weak, Thermaltake is a trusted brand; but your PSU is the backbone of your PC, 250 might not cut it if you upgrade your GPU or maybe even RAM.

I really suggest building you own PC instead of buying a pre made PC with a company’s name behind it. You save money and you can over clock or do other things without voiding the warranty.

Use Newegg’s forum if you need to build a PC with an exact price limit.
